AC and Furnace Combo SystemFrequently Asked Questions
What is a furnace and AC combo system, and how does it work?
A furnace and ac combo (often called a "split system") is a complete heating and cooling solution. It consists of an indoor gas furnace, an indoor evaporator coil, and an outdoor air conditioner condenser. In the winter, the gas furnace ac system burns fuel to create heat, which is blown through your ducts. In the summer, the outdoor unit works with the indoor coil to remove heat from your home, providing crisp, cool air.
What size furnace and AC combo do I need for my home?
Finding the right size is critical for efficiency and equipment longevity. A system that is too small won’t keep up, while one that is too large will "short cycle," leading to premature wear. Generally, sizing depends on your home’s square footage, climate zone, and insulation quality. We recommend using our System Selector or consulting with a pro to ensure your new furnace ac system is perfectly matched to your home's "load calculation."
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
Yes, in most cases, a matched ac and furnace replacement is the smartest move. When you install a complete furnace and ac combo, the components are engineered to work together at peak efficiency. Replacing only one half of an aging system can lead to compatibility issues, reduced SEER2 ratings, and the added labor cost of having a technician come back out a year or two later when the older half eventually fails.
Do these AC and furnace replacement systems come with a warranty?
Absolutely. Every furnace and ac combo we sell at HVAC Total comes with a robust manufacturer’s warranty. Most brands, such as Goodman or ACiQ, offer a 10-Year Parts Limited Warranty. To ensure you are fully covered, the system must be installed by a licensed contractor and registered with the manufacturer within 60 days of installation.
What is upflow, downflow, and horizontal configuration in a furnace AC system?
This refers to the direction the air travels through your furnace:
Upflow: The unit takes in air at the bottom and discharges it out the top. Common in basements.
Downflow: The unit takes in air at the top and discharges it out the bottom. Common in utility closets or homes on concrete slabs.
Horizontal: The unit lies on its side, pushing air left to right or right to left. Common in attics or crawlspaces.
Most of our furnace air conditioner systems feature "multi-po" (multi-positional) furnaces that can be configured in several of these ways to fit your space.
How long does it take to install a furnace and AC combo system?
A standard ac and furnace replacement typically takes a professional crew 8 to 14 hours (one to two full working days). This timeline can vary depending on whether your existing ductwork needs modifications or if the new gas furnace ac system requires updated electrical or gas lines to meet current building codes.
How do I know when it's time for an AC and furnace replacement?
If your current furnace ac system is over 15 years old, requiring frequent repairs, or causing your energy bills to spike, it is likely time for an upgrade. Other warning signs include uneven temperatures throughout the house, excessive noise, or a yellow (instead of blue) burner flame in your furnace. Investing in a new furnace and ac combo now can save you thousands in emergency repairs and high utility costs over the coming years.
Can I install these standard AC and furnace systems in a mobile home?
No. Standard residential furnaces and split systems are not engineered to meet HUD safety standards or the specialized downflow ductwork requirements of manufactured housing. If you live in a manufactured or modular home, explore our dedicated mobile home AC and furnace systems to find certified downflow units engineered specifically for your footprint.
