I was so impressed with the MrCool DYI system that I really felt inclined to post my experience, especially since I found little information out there on installing on interior walls. My project consisted of installing a MrCool DIY 18,000 BTU 1.5 Ton 2-Zone Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner with Heat Pump ordered locally from big orange (they would not take my lengthy review). The reasonable price and having pretty much everything you need including the PRE-CHARGE line sets is what really sold me (oh as well as many positive reviews). The unit arrived very well packaged and on a pallet. I think I had 5 boxes in all.The installation was to install the unit purchased in our two-bedroom bunk house located next to our Lake house property. The bunk house was being renovated and finished to the point where drywall was going in. This was the perfect time for getting this setup as it certainly made running the line sets a bit easier, especially since the air handlers would be on an interior wall of each bedroom. The main bedroom wall where the air handler was mounted backed up to the other bedroom so the line set and drain lines would have to be handled within that 3.5” wall space (so having that wall open certainly helped, but if I had drywall there, I would have just cut out a square and put an access panel back over it. The connection to the line set was made in the wall and routed up into the attic space (See images A and B). The drain line was routed through all the studs to the outside wall (image C). The second bedroom install was a bit easier since there was a bathroom cabinet (floor to ceiling) right behind the wall that the air handler was put on, so making those connections to the line set was a bit easier. I just limited what I could store in the very top of that cabinet but still had a cabinet door on it (it was hard to use that space anyway since it was near the ceiling. Now to get both line sets outside I routed them to the water heater and sewage pump closet which was located next to an outside wall where the outdoor unit would be located. When the water heater was out of the way I could easily route both line sets out the same hole (image D) leaving what little slack was left in the closet or in the attic. I wanted as neat and clean an installation on the outside unit as possible. I used spray foam to seal up any gaps where the line set came though the outside wall. I did use the provided flange pipe to neatly finish the outside hole and wrapped the line sets all together with wire ties and the provided vinyl wrap (which they give you plenty, not in picture) tape for a secure and clean finished look (image E).Pre-Charged lines sets: These were very easy to connect once you get them lined up. I really don’t think I lost any of the freon on any of the hookups due to the fact that the O-ring seems to already seal the connection even before the valve opens as you tighten up the fitting with adjustable wrenches. (Don’t over tighten as the connections really just need to be good and snug, so the connection doesn’t flex at the joint. No freon should ever even touch the threads (so if there is a leak there, its likely the O-ring and not how tight that connection is).Electrical: I purchased a new disconnect box and water proof cable set which I installed to power up the system. I did purchase an outdoor wall mount from Amazon, which I had to modify a bit to fit the unit on it with the proper amount of clearance from the wall. I just wanted off the ground for a cleaner look and less likely to sustain damage from lawn mowers and various yard equipment, plus having it higher was easier on the back as I set there in a lawn chair while making all the connections (Image F).Startup: After letting the system set for about 30 minutes, I flipped on the breaker and used the remote to turn on both air handlers. Both came right on and began blowing cold air. That was such a satisfying moment, especially since I had never installed any type of air conditioning system. The temperature outside was in the high 90’s and in 30 minutes both bedrooms were down 68 degrees.Finished up the remodel: So, the next two weeks were great as we worked in the MrCool Comfort finishing up the remodel of our two-bedroom single bath bunk house.Disaster Strikes: Just one more weekend to finish up painting and installing bath fixtures and the grand kids will have their own place to hang out and sleep come the 4th of July holiday weekend. Well, for Father’s Day 2023 saw a major storm blow in and I woke up to my Father’s Day gift of a massive 100 year plus old tree laying on the floor of our newly renovated bunk house. Power was out so I could not test the MrCool unit even with one of the air handlers hanging by it’s line set. The rest of the MrCool unit was not damaged, but bunk house will have to be completely removed down to the foundation and rebuilt (Image G).After the insurance adjuster finally made it out, I got back to work removing th...
